Grooming:
Portidoodle dogs are medium to low maintenance when it comes to grooming. They have a medium-length wavy or curly coat, they require a quick brush every other day and should be bathed a minimum of 2-3 times a month. Their ears should be cleaned regularly (including pulling out the extra hairs), and their teeth brushed at a minimum of a few times every week. Some dog bones will also help their teeth. It is beneficial to clip or file their nails monthly. It is recommended to start the Portidoodle puppy grooming process early to get them accustom to the grooming tools and get them comfortable with their ears, paws, and bodies getting handled.
Exercise:
Portidoodles can be energetic dogs who love to be active at times. They enjoy running, chasing, fetching, playing frisbee, and most of all sometimes playing in the water. They love having a job to do and solving challenges. Some of the best ways to engage with your puppy is to give them canine puzzles, toys, and activities that keep their minds stimulated and their bodies worked out.
Training:
They can be taught complex obedience and agility very quickly. They respond best to positive reinforcement training and reward-based methods. As eager-to-please dogs, they can be motivated with praise, a gentle and fun approach, and vet-approved treat rewards. It is important to start teaching your Portidoodle puppy during early puppy years that it is okay to enjoy some alone time and that being alone is temporary. It is not recommended to leave your Portidoodle alone for more than 8 hours each day as some might develop separation anxiety and can cause naught behaviors. Early training is key for a well-behaved adult dog.

Doodle Generations

F1
First Generation
F1 is a direct result of breeding a 100% Standard Poodle and a 100% Portuguese Water Dog. This generation has the health benefits known as "hybrid vigor."This refers to having the best health benefits from both parents in one designer doodle. The mix of the genes tends to lead to a decrease in the health risks that may be associated with the purebred parents. For example, if a Golden Retriever and a poodle were bred there could still be a chance the puppy could shed. In our case at G & A's Desert Doodles, your puppy is 100% non-shedding and hypoallergenic
F2
Second Generation
This specific generation is a result of breeding two F1 Portidoodles together. This is not usually recommended because there is a 75% possibility of the genes mutating back to their purebred counterparts. For example, if you bred an F1 goldendoodle with another F1 goldendoodle you would have a 75% chance that the puppy would have a shedding coat. The way genetics work when breeding this way could result in a full poodle or full Portuguese Water Dog.
F1b
First Generation Backcross
The term backcross refers to breeding a hybrid doodle (Portidoodle) back to one of the breeds it originated from (Poodle or Portuguese Water Dog). Genetically they are still considered a first generation. However, the traits of the purebred it was bred back to can be intensified. (For example, a golden doodle bred with a poodle again would result in a less shedding coat.) The "hybrid vigor," is still present, but due to the multigenerational litters, health testing becomes more important to test for genetic diseases.
